PowerToChoose.org: The good and the bad…

Many people have used powertochoose.org and signed up for electricity plans available there.  Buyer beware!  Here is a little background for you.  Powertochoose.org was created soon after Texas decided to give consumers the choice on who they wanted to purchase their electricity from.   The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) created the power to choose website as a way to assist homeowners in making a decision into this new way of purchasing electricity.  This was a good idea as customers did not have a way to see their options.  However, times have changed since the website was created. There are now electricity brokers like www.electricityshark.com that give the consumer even more detail into electricity rates and plans.  Powertochoose.org does not give as much insight and background into the providers who list on their website.  Brokers have become the information hub for consumers to find the best deal on their electricity rates and plans.

Powertochoose.org will allow any retail electric provider (R.E.P.) to show their plans on this site.  There is very little vetting which can lead to big problems for the homeowner.  Powertochoose.org has become more of a game for providers.  They will list unbelievable low rates to get you to sign up and raise prices dramatically after a period of time.  The power to choose website does not consider very important decision making factors such as BBB ratings, reputation, reviews, and most importantly, PUCT violations.   At Electricityshark.com you have the power to choose from providers that have been vetted and have outstanding reviews and reputation.  Most people are turning to electricity brokers to help them navigate finding the best electricity plans and rates.
